Glass moulds play an essential role in the art of glass fusing, providing artists with the means to shape molten glass into desired forms and textures as it cools and solidifies. When fusing glass, the artist arranges pieces of glass atop a mould inside a kiln. As the kiln heats up, the glass softens and begins to conform to the mould’s contours beneath it. These moulds are crafted from various materials, such as ceramic, stainless steel, or specially formulated refractory materials, each offering unique characteristics that can affect the final appearance of the fused glass piece. The durability of the mould is critical as it must withstand multiple firings at high temperatures while maintaining its shape. Whether creating smooth, consistent bowls and plates or complex, textured sculptures, the quality and design of the glass moulds are pivotal in achieving precise results and expanding the creative possibilities within the process of glass fusing.
